High-Performance Residential Network
Maintenance & Telemetry
Speed Tests
- Run speed test from the Work Laptop (wired connection)
- Expected results: ~940Mbps up/down
- Test monthly or when performance issues arise
- Use fast.com or speedtest.net for consistent results
Bridge Check
- Check the Ubiquiti app once a season (especially after storms) to ensure alignment hasn't shifted
- Target signal strength: between -50dBm and -60dBm
- Realign if signal degrades below -65dBm
Updates
- Enable auto-updates in the UniFi Network controller, or schedule a maintenance window (gateway, switch, and APs update together)
- Check the NanoStation bridge firmware quarterly via the UISP mobile app
- Update the TP-Link outdoor AP firmware semi-annually
Heat Management
- Ensure the Office 16-port switch is not covered by papers or books
- Check that all switches have adequate airflow
- Verify NEMA box at gate doesn't exceed 70°C in summer
Quarterly Checklist
- [ ] Test all wired connections for full gigabit speeds
- [ ] Verify Plex static IP hasn't changed
- [ ] Check bridge signal strength and alignment
- [ ] Inspect gate enclosure for water intrusion
- [ ] Test UPS battery backup duration
- [ ] Verify guest network isolation
- [ ] Verify IoT VLAN cannot reach Main, and that Home Assistant can still reach IoT
- [ ] Review UniFi client/throughput telemetry in Home Assistant for anomalies
Annual Maintenance
- [ ] Replace UPS batteries (typically every 3-5 years)
- [ ] Inspect all outdoor cabling and connections
- [ ] Clean dust from switches and equipment
- [ ] Review and update network documentation
- [ ] Test disaster recovery procedures
